Are Slots Going Social?

October 31, 2012

Just this week we reported on the fact that Zynga, one of the top Facebook game developers, has signed a deal with Bwin Party to break into pay to play online gambling. This is just the latest in a string of game developers which operate via social networking platforms to consider establishing a presence as an online casino site.

This is theoretically very good news for video slot fans. Why? Well many of these Facebook developers, including Zynga, have been extremely successful due to the way they have used social networking platforms to enhance online slots play. The socially enabled video slot games encourage the player to share and promote their online gambling experience with their social contacts. They also enable players to compare online slot performance and rankings with their friends who they are connected with through social networking sites. If we consider the fact that online gambling can be addictive, and that this kind of social promotion is likely to raise the number of people playing at an online casino, they we can deduce that these types of features would be of benefit for online casino operators.

However, these advanced socially enabled gameplay features would also add depth to gameplay, and be of benefit to actual slot players. This is especially true if we consider that one of the main ways that social slot developers encourage interaction between players is the sharing of daily rewards and bonuses. If the same kinds of features make the transition to pay to play online casino sites, then players will be given generous advantage for encouraging their friends to sing up and play video slot games. This is obviously a good thing, and would take the form of free spins, free casino coins and other daily promotions. These would probably be quite small free gifts, but if you have enough friends, they could add up to a significant daily free bonus.

We have to say that we are excited to see the likes of Zynga make the move to pay to play online casino operators. We think that the current Zynga technology, if applied to pay to play online slot games, could significantly improve and extend the online gambling experience. We look forward to seeing what develops in the coming months, and whether video slot games will become much more social.
