New Jersey Update
May 21, 2013
So far, only a handful of States in the USA have come forward, and openly said that they are moving towards making online gambling legal within their borders. Currently Delaware, Illinois, Nevada and New Jersey have all begun moving towards making licensed online casino sites legal. However, there has not been an awful lot of news recently over how far this situation has progressed. We have heard a little news about New Jersey though, so we thought we would publish this article to give readers an update on online gambling and online casino play within New Jersey. Especially with regards to actions taken by the newly formed Division of Gaming Enforcement.
Very recently the Division of Gaming Enforcement has revised some of the rules that would be applied to legal online gambling within the state. These rules include how the geo location of the player could be verified and the addition of a 15% tax on online casino winnings.
There is still no clear timetable as to when online casino play may become legal within the state, but people expect it to be sometime before the end of 2013. David Rebuck, the Director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement, has stated that, “New Jersey has once again proven to be in the forefront of casino gaming with the development of Internet wagering regulations for all casino games.”
In all honesty, until the very first online casino becomes legally available to citizens of New Jersey, then we think that this statement is a little far-fetched. So far, all we have is a lot of noise, with very little action. Sure, New Jersey may get there eventually, but it lags behind states such as Nevada, that have already begun issuing local online gambling licences.
However, although we think that the statement released by the Division of Gaming Enforcement is not exactly accurate, we cannot fault the fact that it is willing to actually come out and say that things are progressing. It was only around 12 months ago that most major online casino operators were forced to pull out of the USA entirely, and to see the door begin to open, that will allow many of these international online casino sites an opportunity to enter back into the USA market, is obviously a very good thing. So despite the lack of forward movement, we are happy to see the issue is still progressing, albeit slowly.
