Changes to Italian Gambling Regulations Enable a New Online Casino Launch

December 27, 2011

The name Playtech should be well known to all online gamblers. Alongside Net Entertainment and Microgaming, they are one of the major designers, developers and licensers of online gambling games including online slots and online poker.

Playtech have recently been able to cash in on a change to gambling legislation in Italy, by passing the test that online gambling platforms need to take before they are allowed to operate in the Italian online gambling marketplace. The AAMS, which is the gambling regulator in Italy, requires that all online gambling sites now pass what they name the “Collaudo” test. This ensures that the platform is secure and robust, and that it complies with Italy’s gambling legislation standards. Playtech are the first platform provider to pass this test successfully.

As a result of gaining approval from the Italian legislative body, Playtech have signed new license agreements with several Italian online casinos including Buongiorno and SISAL, both of which target purely local online gamblers in Italy. This has, in effect, given Playtech a monopoly on Italian online gambling, which is obviously good news for them, as the other major platform providers will now need to first pass the Collaudo test and then find local online casinos with which to partner. Playtech have already skimmed the cream off the top.

The licensees will be deploying all of Playtech’s online gambling content, as well as its back end and administration system as an integral part of their newly launched Italian online casinos. Since 2008, Playtech have gained a more than average market share of the Italian online gaming marketplace. As a result of these recent happenings it is set to remain the market local leader in the years to come. Current Italian licensees of the Playtech online gambling platform are iPoker, BetClic, Cogetech Eorobet, SISAL and SNAI. These represent every major online casino brand in Italy.

Playtech have stated that they are pleased to have passed the legislative testing, and continue to see Italy as a major revenue stream for their products. They have also expressed a wish to begin helping Italian based online casinos to begin getting up to speed with the deployment of mobile online slots and other online gambling games.
