Churchill Downs License

July 27, 2012

We have reported on several major players applying for, and successfully receiving online gambling licenses at the hands of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The latest in the string of companies to apply for an online gambling license in the USA is Churchill Downs, most noted as the owner of the Kentucky Racetrack and host of the annual Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs has applied for an online gambling license, with a view to opening an online poker site in the USA.

The application for an online gambling license by Churchill Downs to the Nevada Gaming Control Board comes close behind the company’s acquisition of Bluff Media in the first quarter of 2012. Bluff Media operate both bluff.com and bluffpoker.com, and the acquisition provides Churchill Downs with everything it needs to become a major player in the online poker market should the Nevada Gaming Control Board grant its application for an online gambling license.

Ted Gay of Churchill Downs has stated that, “Nevada is an important regulatory body and we felt that it was important to be part of the process early on, the company’s branching out into the online poker marketplace will be a huge challenge, but we have been an online operator for several years, so in many ways we have an advantage over the land-based casino companies.”

Churchill Downs is also reportedly in negotiations with both Ongame and Playtech over the provision of an online gambling platform, should the Nevada Gaming Control Board approve the application for an online gambling license, allowing Churchill Downs to develop an online poker site.

Recently the Nevada Gaming Control Board has approved online gambling licenses for International Gaming Technology and Bally Technologies, both major players in the online gambling sector in their own right, and we have a feeling that this new application by Churchill Downs will also be approved. So the future is indeed looking rosy for a whole bunch of American companies who are set to begin forging ahead in this new, legalized online gambling home market, which can only be a good thing for us video slots fans!
