Cryptologic to Power Quebec Online Casino
February 12, 2012
Cryptologic have signed a lucrative new deal with Espacejeux, who are the online casino arm of Société du jeu virtuel du Québec, which operates the Quebec state lottery.
Although the deal is fundamentally to provide a license for the Cryptologic online gambling platform, including its online slots games, there is some cross over with the actual state lottery itself.
Cryptologic is one of the oldest online gambling platform developers around, starting out in 1995. Currently they employ over 100 people, and develop not only online slots and other online gambling games, but also specialized ecommerce systems. There can be no doubt that this diverse background is what leads Espacejeux to choose Cryptologic as its platform provider. After all, Espacejeux are an online casino with a difference, as they also operate the local state lottery, Loto- Quebec.
Initially Espacejeux are online licensing 14 of the top performing Cryptologic online slots and online gambling games. The deployment will be staggered across the next 12 months, with the first game already published on the Espacejeux website.
This is actually quite a small licensing deal for Cryptologic, yet one which could bare further fruit at some stage in the future. Quebec, like most places, has an online gambling market. Espacejeux and its parent company Société du jeu virtuel du Québec are without a doubt the local market leader. By signing this deal, Cryptologic have effectively sewn up the local Quebec online gambling market.
Indeed, a spokesman for Cryptologic has stated that, "Working with governmental organizations such as Loto-Québec underpins Cryptologic's reputation for delivering innovative but also responsible gaming solutions." Reading between the lines, Cryptologic obviously see this deal as more of a reputation booster than an actual cash cow.
However, this is a strange agreement to enter into at this time, as Cryptologic are currently about to be acquired by Amaya. The deal is on the table, and signing a licensing agreement which is not likely to bring in the usual level of revenue can only look bad on the Cryptologic balance sheet. We can only wonder whether Amaya will form the same conclusions we have about this deal, and act accordingly.
