DoubleDown Going Pay to Play
January 24, 2013
Zynga, one of the top Facebook game developers, are well along the road top opening a fully pay to play online casino site. It is no surprising that other Facebook game developers are now considering the same options. International Game Technology (IGT), the developers and operators of DoubleDown online casino on Facebook, are not considering opening a pay to play online casino site of their own.
International Game Technology (IGT) has just recently released its earnings figures for 2012. They were pretty impressive. IGT earnings totaled $530 million, and displayed an overall growth of some 20% over the previous year. If we consider these earnings, then we can see how IGT would be tempted to now open a fully-fledged online casino via the Facebook platform, it simply has the possibility of generating a very series chunk of revenue.
Speaking last year, DoubleDown CEO Greg Enell stated that, “Six months ago, we didn’t consider real money an option at all, but with IGT that becomes an option, because they’re licensed and regulated in all the states in the U.S. And because we have the strength of the relationship on Facebook, we can marry all of that together and, for example, offer real-money online slots in California on Facebook.”
Sure, we understand, the temptation to cash in on the millions of players who already access the free to play DoubleDown online casino on Facebook must be overwhelming. Combine this with the extremely reduced cost to market, as International Game Technology already has a huge chunk of the technology in place to facilitate such a project, and we have a true soft puppy sell. We think it is not a question of whether IGT will open a full online casino, simply a question of when it will happen.
Of course, this is great news for use online casino players, as it brings something new to the market. Both IGT and Zynga offer social enabled online gambling games in a free to play format via Facebook. If they follow this route for pay to play games, it will add a whole new aspect of gameplay to online gambling games.
