Kickstarter Bans Online Casino Project

February 15, 2013

GamesBeat thought they had come up with a great idea for a new type of online casino game. Their idea, that they named Chumba World, was going to be a Facebook application that combined social gaming, with online gambling. Like many new developers, GamesBeat lacked the funding to turn this idea into a reality. So GamesBeat turned its eyes upon Kickstarter, the top crowdfunding site in the world.

For those that don’t know, crowdfunding is the name given to the concept of raising significant amounts of capital, from multiple smaller public investors. Kickstarter is a website that brings those seeking funding, and those wishing to invest together by posting project listings.

GamesBeat was only looking for some $50,000 is development capital, a small project compared to many of those found on the Kickstarter site, which are often a million dollars or more in total. Kickstarter features a massive range of projects, from simple movie production to crazy inventions that need funding. Indeed, a quick browse of the Kickstarter site shows some pretty wild and whacky projects looking for funding, and these are left on the site with no problem. But when a developer comes along, with a solid business proposal and a minimal amount of development capital required, it is kicked from the site with 4 days, simply because it is online gambling related.

Kickstarter has said that it is unwilling to comment on just why it decided to ban the GamesBeat project, Chumba World, and has sited privacy and legal reasons for this. We call hogwash; we can see no reason why Kickstarter would not give a valid reason for its actions. We suggest that Kickstarter takes a look at some of the blatantly fail projects that are attempting to obtain funding via its site, and start targeting those that are obviously going to fail, instead of censoring online gambling projects.

We wish GamesBeat the best of luck in obtaining its minimal level of development funding, and we really hope that Chumba World becomes a reality, as it seems to be something new and unique, although we would prefer to see it published outside of the Facebook social networking platform, which is already far too overcrowded.
